Bands could be superstars in Ontario or Quebec but remained complete mysteries just across the border. April Wine was the quintessential example of this regional isolation until a lucky alignment with the compilation giant K-Tel changed everything.

When “You Could Have Been A Lady” was released in 1972, it wasn’t just a cover of a Hot Chocolate track; it was a high-stakes studio breakthrough. The band took the soulful, strutting original and injected it with a harder, North American edge—characterized by Myles Goodwyn’s sharp vocal delivery and a beefier guitar mix. It was a “dangerous” move for a young band to lead with a cover, but the reward was immense. By landing on a K-Tel collection, the track became a “Trojan Horse,” bypassing traditional radio gatekeepers to reach a massive, unsuspecting audience. It proved that a regional anthem could find a global audience if it found the right delivery vehicle.

[8

post-72","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-regional-anthems
["GET
