Most artists were content to stay in their lanes, but the Dutch band <b data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"292\">Focus<\/b> saw the recording studio not as a workplace, but as a laboratory for high-stakes creative adventures. Their leader, Thijs van Leer, was a multi-instrumentalist who didn&#8217;t believe in &#8220;sides&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">In 1971, this philosophy resulted in <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"37\">&#8220;Hocus Pocus&#8221;<\/b>. At its core, the song was a massive risk\u2014a seven-minute instrumental built on a heavy, ear-splitting rock riff that felt both ancient and futuristic. But in the middle of this high-volume recording, Van Leer decided to insert a full-scale, &#8220;heavy metal yodel&#8221;. He wasn&#8217;t just looking for a new hook; he was looking for a technical collision.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">He took the folk-rooted art of yodeling and smashed it into the distorted energy of the burgeoning prog-rock scene. His bandmates watched as Van Leer layered flute trills, accordion bursts, and falsetto shrieks over Jan Akkerman\u2019s crushing guitar lines. It was a maverick recording\u2014unpredictable, dense, and demanding. Radio programmers had no idea how to handle &#8220;heavy metal yodeling,&#8221; yet for those who stayed for the full duration, the reward was a technical epiphany.
